GOOD THINKING,
GOOD MOVIES!

The International Film and Broadcast Academy, IFBA, in partnership with the Goethe Institut, Nigeria, organised the first edition of In-Short, an international film festival in Lagos. During the event, which held from October 13 to 15, 2011, international short films of different genres were screened; though the organisers laid emphasis on Nigerian and German shorts.

The festival opened with a master class on making short films. This was facilitated by German filmmaker Lothar Herzog, whose latest short film, You Know the Park is Filled with Flowers, was in official competition at the 2011 Berlinale.

The class, which had about twenty- five participants drawn from a few film schools and broadcast houses, also had some independent filmmakers and journalists in attendance. The master class turned out to be an interactive session, in which participants saw three films that formed the basis of their deliberations. Expectedly, You Know the Park is Filled with flowers was one of the three films.

Speaking during the opening ceremony at the Silverbird Galleria, Victoria Island, Lagos, Victor Okhai, IFBA President, noted that In-Short was borne out of the desire to create a vital avenue through which young and talented filmmakers can show their capabilities.

In his speech, the Director of the Goethe Institut (the German Cultural Centre), Marc-Andre Schmachtel, stated that short films give filmmakers the opportunity to say so much in as little as five minutes.

Emeka Mba, Director General of the National Film and Video Censors Board, said that short films provide one of the platforms through which filmmakers go in different directions and hopefully arrive at the same destination.

Bloodstones, The Camera and Dog’s Life by Didi Cheeka, Julius Morno and Veit Helmer respectively were screened during the opening ceremony. Over the course of the event, scores of films were screened simultaneously at the Nigerian Film Corporation, Ikoyi and the Silverbird Galleria.

In the morning of October 15, the third and final day of In-Short, there was a special forum for makers of short films at the Goethe Institut.

At the closing ceremony of the In-Short International Film Festival held at the Silverbird Galleria, the IFBA president Victor Okhai recognised some partners who supported the festival. These included Goethe Institut, whose director stated that the cultural centre would continue its support for In-Short, The Lagos Film Office, Hitv, Silverbird Cinemas, the National Film and Video Censors Board. Okhai expressed his gratitude for their immense support and thanked everyone for attending. The comperes for the opening and closing ceremonies of the In-Short International Film Festival were actors - Lilian Amah Aluko and Keppy Ekpenyong Bassey Inyang.
